বালাগঞ্জ সদরএকসময় ব্যবসা এবং বাণিজ্যের ক্ষেত্রে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ নৌ-বন্দর হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হত। সিলেট বিভাগের বিভিন্ন স্থান এমনকি দেশের অন্যান্য অঞ্চল থেকেও নিত্যপ্রয়োজনীয় জিনিষপত্র বালাগঞ্জ ঘাট দিয়ে আনা-নেওয়া করা হত। বিভিন্ন এলাকা থেকে মানুষজন এখানে এসে তাদের পন্য-সামগ্রী কেনা-বেচা করত। বালাগঞ্জ বাজার প্রধানতঃ ধান এবং শীতলপাটী’র জন্য বিখ্যাত ছিল। বর্তমানে বালাগঞ্জ সদর তার পুরনো ঐতিহ্য অনেকটা হারিয়ে ফেলেছে, তবে এ উপজেলার গোয়ালাবাজার এবং তাজপুর বাজার দিনে দিনে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ব্যবসাকেন্দ্র হিসেবে জনপ্রিয় হয়ে উঠছে। বাজার দুটি ঢাকা-সিলেট মহাসড়কের ওপরে অবস্থান করায় উন্নত যাতায়াত ও পরিবহন সুবিধা ভোগ করে চলেছে।

 

Business and Commerce:

Balaganj HQ was once an important marine center for business and commerce. It was a port for transportation of goods of daily use through river-ways within the division and even other parts of the country. People from different corners of the country would gather here with their goods for ‘sale and purchase’. Balaganj was once famous for the availability of Rice and Shital Pati (natural mats) in the markets. Now a days, it has lost it’s glory of the past but on the other hand, Goalabazaar and Tajpur bazaar under Osmaninagar Police Station in Balaganj turned, by this time, into important business centers. These two places are located on Dhaka-Sylhet highway and hence enjoy better transport facilities than others.
